Department of family medicine

The scientific research of the department is focused on addressing issues related to the prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases, medical and social expertise, rehabilitation, and nursing science.

The Department of Family Medicine consists of 26 people: 7 professors, 1 honored professor, 5 associate professors, 9 assistant professors, and 4 instructors.
Science
The main scientific directions of the department are related to the prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases, medical and social expertise, and nursing science.
Our faculty members' publications are featured in prestigious international peer-reviewed journals. The department participates in grant-funded and contractual scientific projects, as well as in international multicenter studies.
Our staff has developed and widely uses a curriculum for the elective course "Medical Errors in General Practice," which is utilized in medical universities. In the ERASMUS+ projects "FOR-21," ERASMUS+ "BERNICA," and UN (UNFPA) initiatives, our employees research the issue of "Strengthening Prevention and Response to Violence Against Women and Girls in Central Asia."
The student scientific club operates in the field of "Prevention and Treatment of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases at the Primary Health Care Level." Participants are engaged in searching for information on evidence-based medicine. A journal club is also active.
Education
Our priority is training at the patient's bedside. We interact with students from the 5th, 6th, and 7th years, residents, master's students, doctoral candidates, and practitioners from primary health care. Our educational process involves direct patient reception by general practitioners in outpatient clinics, active home visits, and care in day hospitals. We pay special attention to developing skills for timely disease diagnosis, effective treatment, prevention, and rehabilitation in accordance with the clinical protocols of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Clinic
Training of graduates is conducted at the best clinical bases in the city of Karaganda and the region:
- Centers of best practices (KGP "Polyclinic No. 3 of Karaganda");
- KGP "Polyclinic No. 1", KGP "Polyclinic No. 3", KGP "Polyclinic No. 4", KGP "Polyclinic No. 5";
- Center for Primary Health Care, LLP "Clinic Miras", "Jusan med", LLP "InLaif".
To implement "patient-oriented education", highly qualified specialists and clinical mentors are involved, with a significant portion of the department's faculty holding the highest and first qualification categories. Our instructors participate in consultations on the most complex medical cases and collaborate with air ambulance services. They also present at conferences and professional seminars.
Regular master classes on relevant topics, such as "Medical and Social Expertise and Rehabilitation", "Disease Management Program", and "Clinical Aspects of Managing Patients with Chronic Diseases at the Primary Health Care Level", are held with the involvement of leading specialists.

History of the Department
- 1987 – The origins of the Department of Family Medicine began with the Department of "Polyclinic Therapy." The first head of the department was Albert N.I.
- 2017 – The merger with the Department of General Practice No. 1 and the Department of General Practice No. 2 created the Department of General Practice No. 1.
- 2018 – Renamed to the Department of "Family Medicine."
The Department of Outpatient Polyclinic Therapy, Family Medicine, and Emergency Medical Assistance, previously known as the Department of Polyclinic Therapy, was established on February 1, 1987, in accordance with the orders of the Ministry of Health of the Kazakh SSR No. 36 dated January 16, 1987, and the rector of KGMU No. 58 dated January 20, 1987.
The first head of the department was the renowned therapist, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Nathan Iosifovich Albertson, a graduate of the Almaty State Medical Institute in the specialty of therapeutic medicine (1946). He began working at the Karaganda Medical Institute in 1954 as an assistant in the Department of Propedeutics of Internal Diseases, and in 1966 he was elected head of the Department of Occupational Diseases. Since 1975, he has been working as a professor in the Department of Internal Diseases No. 3. In January 1986, he was elected head of the Department of Internal Diseases No. 3, and from February 1987, by agreement with the Ministry of Health of the Kazakh SSR, he was transferred to the position of head of the Department of Polyclinic Therapy due to its establishment.
From 1991 to 2005, the department was led by Karlygash Angelbaevna Alihanova, a graduate of KGMU (1971), a Lenin scholarship holder, Candidate of Medical Sciences (1981), Associate Professor (1986), Doctor of Medical Sciences (1996), Professor (1997), and Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Education (2013).
In April 2005, due to the reorganization of departments, two new departments were created. At the Faculty of Postgraduate Education and Continuous Professional Development of KGMU, the Department of Family Medicine and Outpatient Polyclinic Therapy was established, which was later renamed to the Department of General Practice with a course on medical and social expertise and rehabilitation, then to the Department of General Practice with courses in phthisiatry, psychiatry, obstetrics and gynecology, dermatovenerology, and infectious diseases (led by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor K.A. Alihanova) and Department of General Practice No. 1 (Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Muldaeva G.M.).
On September 1, 2011, the Department of General Practice No. 2 was established, which was reorganized into Department of General Practice No. 1 in September 2017. From 2011 to August 2018, the department was headed by Guldzhan Jumagalievna Mershenova, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Professor, and therapist of the highest category. In 2018, due to the opening of the specialty "Family Medicine" in residency, a new department of "Family Medicine" was established.
From September 2018 to June 5, 2020, the department was headed by Baurzhan Kadenovich Omarkulov, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor, general practitioner, and organizer of healthcare of the highest qualification category.
