Center for simulation and educational technologies

The simulation center is a place where patients never complain, and the doctor is allowed to learn from his own mistakes. Here, in conditions as close to real as possible, they practice on medical simulators.

History of Simulation Technologies in Medicine

  • The history of medical simulation spans thousands of years and is closely linked to the development of medical knowledge, the course of scientific and technological progress, and military orders. Many modern projects for creating simulators have had practical military significance and have been funded by defense agencies.
  • Key milestones in the development of medical simulators date back to the fall of the Roman Empire.
  • The absence of refrigerators and convenient methods for preserving corpses limited the ability to perform autopsies during the cold months of the year. Anatomical models began to be made from non-perishable materials, the most suitable of which turned out to be wax. In addition to wax, materials such as plaster, terracotta, wood, rubber, and papier-mâché were used for manufacturing.
  • In 1742, the University of Bologna (Italy) established a museum of anatomy that gathered the first collection of teaching aids made of wax.
  • By the early 20th century, there was no practical medical discipline where simulation technologies were not applied.
  • Advances in the chemical industry led to the emergence of plastic mannequins, while progress in computer technologies predetermined the creation of virtual trainers and patient simulators.
  • Today, modern innovative technologies and materials are used to create anatomical models and phantoms.
  • The first full-sized computer mannequin-simulator was designed in the mid-1960s.

Main Areas of Activity:

  • Training in clinical and practical skills using simulation technologies.

  • Transfer of innovative teaching technologies in medical education for faculty members.
