Department of informatics and biostatistics
The Department of Informatics and Biostatistics is dedicated to relatively young, modern, and promising areas of medical science: biophysics, medical cybernetics, and medical electronics.
We consider the issues of physical and physicochemical mechanisms of interactions that underlie biological processes occurring at different levels of organization of living matter. Students develop digital competencies.
Science
Important areas of research activity for the department have become scientific and technical programs and projects: “Environmental Risks and Public Health,” “Personalized Stroke Prevention in Patients with Arterial Hypertension and Cerebrovascular Insufficiency Using Biofeedback Methods,” “Correction of Metabolic Syndrome Components Using Biofeedback Methods in Patients with Cardiovascular Risk,” “Personalized Approaches in Managing a Number of Significant Diseases,” “COVID-19: Scientific and Technological Justification for a Response System to the Spread of New Respiratory Infections, Including Coronavirus Infections,” “Adaptive Educational Environment as a Condition for the Development of Flexible Skills in University Students and Ensuring Continuity in School Education,” “Detection of SARS-CoV-2 in Nasal Swabs Using MALDI-MS and Machine Learning Methods,” “Investigating Health Literacy among Students of Higher Educational Institutions in the Republic of Kazakhstan to Improve Approaches to Promoting and Strengthening Health.”
Department staff publish articles not only in domestic but also in foreign publications included in the Web of Science (15 publications) and Scopus (19 publications) databases.
Representatives of the department are members of the Senate, Scientific Committee of NAO “MUK,” and editorial board of the journal “Medicine and Ecology,” local bioethics commission, and ethical committee for assessing scientific research at NAO “MUK”; they are part of the working group on integrated educational programs and the civil defense system’s public order unit.

The department supervises master's and doctoral dissertations on the following topics:
- “Development and Validation of a Mathematical Model for Microorganism Growth under the Influence of Antimicrobial Chemotherapeutic Agents,” specialty 7M05102 “Biologist-Researcher”;
- “Development and Validation of a Mathematical Model of the Effects of Antimicrobial Agents on Different Mechanisms of Antibiotic Resistance,” specialty 7M05102 “Biologist-Researcher”;
- “Incorporating System Dynamic Modeling in Infection Transmission of Tuberculosis,” specialty 8D10139 – Public Health.
Education
The educational activities of the department are conducted at three levels of education (bachelor's, master's, and doctoral) and in three languages (Kazakh, Russian, and English). We help students master information and communication technologies and molecular fundamentals. In the courses, students not only acquire skills in using internet resources and various programs but also in collecting, processing, and analyzing data. The curriculum addresses the physical and physicochemical mechanisms of interactions that underlie biological processes occurring at different levels of organization in living matter.
Currently, the following subjects are taught in the department:
For bachelor's degree specialties:
- Information and Communication Technologies;
- Mathematics;
- Molecular Biophysics of Cellular Processes. Fundamentals of Bioinformatics;
- Structural Foundations of Life Activities. Molecular Foundations;
- Metabolism and Energy. Excretory System;
- Cardiovascular System, Lymphatic System;
- Molecular Foundations;
- Module: “Scientific Thinking: Basics of Scientific Thinking. Statistical Analysis in Medicine”;
- Module: “Development of Scientific Thinking. Scientific Project: Methodology of Scientific Research”;
