The faculty of the Department of Neurology, Psychiatry, and Rehabilitation consists of 37 full-time instructors, 2 part-time instructors, and 23 clinical mentors. Active teaching methods are widely used in the learning process, including problem-based lectures, practical classes using TBL, CBL, RBL methods, and others.

In the rehabilitation course, 3 new treatment methods have been implemented into practical healthcare and the educational process over the past 3 years.

The department staff takes pride in its graduates, many of whom have become leading specialists in neurology, psychiatry, narcology, and rehabilitation throughout Kazakhstan.

Science

The main scientific directions of the department's work are cerebrovascular diseases (diagnosis and treatment), spondylogenous diseases of the nervous system, methods of traditional medicine in neurological clinics, extrapyramidal disorders, and methods of modern drug correction.

The scope of the department's scientific research includes the study of autoimmune diseases of the nervous system (diseases of the optic neuritis spectrum NMOSD, multiple sclerosis, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, myasthenia), neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson's disease, Parkinsonism plus, Alzheimer's disease), and epilepsy. The electrophysiological manifestations of dysmetabolic and demyelinating diseases of the peripheral nervous system are also studied.

Staff from the Psychiatry and Narcology course regularly organize and participate in international conferences, presenting reports on relevant topics in Psychiatry and Psychology.

From 2019 to 2023, residents of the specialty "Adult and Pediatric Neurology" published 2 articles in journals indexed in Scopus; 3 articles in KOKSON, the journal "Medicine and Ecology"; 9 publications in journals indexed in RINC; and 12 papers in the proceedings of scientific and practical conferences. Among these, the results of research were presented at 7 scientific and practical conferences (4 oral reports, 3 poster presentations). As a result of the research carried out by the Rehabilitation course over the past 3 years, 8 printed works and 10 presentations at conferences and seminars in neighboring and far-abroad countries were completed.

In addition, the staff of the Rehabilitation course can take pride in their participation in the memorandum between Karaganda Medical University and the Schmieder Clinic (Germany). Within the framework of this project, joint scientific research, online conferences, and academic mobility of instructors and residents are conducted.

Members of the student scientific circle of the department actively participate in international competitions and olympiads: the "22nd Global Summit on Pediatrics, Neonatology & Primary Care," held on May 30-31, 2019, in Istanbul, Turkey; and the 12th International Colloquium on Epilepsy, held on May 26-28, 2019, in Cité Internationale in Lyon, France.

Winners of competitions and olympiads:

In March 2023, a master class was conducted by Professor Kasatkin D.S. (Yaroslavl State Medical University, Russian Federation) on the topic: Demyelinating Diseases of the CNS. In March 2022, a face-to-face course of lectures was held by Professor Mukhambetova G.A. (NAO "Kazakh National Medical University named after S.D. Asfendiyarov"), dedicated to issues of pediatric neurology, along with a master class on "Spinal Muscular Atrophies." The PPS and students of the department received certificates of inclusion in the state register of rights to an object protected by copyright: Management of Patients with Acute Cerebrovascular Accident. Thrombolytic Therapy (2019), Algorithm for Assessing the Effectiveness of Therapy for Acute Optic Neuritis in Patients with Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disease (2023).
