The most effective training system in surgical disciplines includes education in three main stages: general surgery, faculty surgery, and hospital surgery.

Department of General Surgery with Traumatology and Orthopedics

General Surgery and Traumatology

Within the "General Surgery and Traumatology" direction, the following disciplines are taught: "General Surgery" in the 3rd year of Medicine and Surgery, "Outpatient Traumatology and Orthopedics for Adults and Children" in the 6th year of Medicine, and "Pediatric Orthopedics" in the 6th year of Pediatrics. All conditions for quality education have been created for students, with classrooms equipped for learning. The clinical base is located at the "MB named after Prof. K.Zh. Makazhanov," City Children's Hospital.

Patient treatment is conducted in 8 specialized departments: Emergency Traumatology Department; Orthopedics Department No. 1 and No. 2; Combustiology and Purulent Traumatology Department; Pediatric Traumatology and Orthopedics Department; Rehabilitation and Restorative Medicine Department; Intensive Care and Anesthesiology Department; Traumatology Department of the City Children's Hospital.

The main goal of the clinic is to provide specialized traumatic assistance to adults and children in the city and region with injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system, thermal injuries; to provide emergency outpatient trauma assistance, dispensary observation, and treatment for the consequences of injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system; early diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of congenital orthopedic pathologies of the musculoskeletal system.

Since 2009, the center has been providing highly specialized medical assistance to the population (hip and knee joint endoprosthetics). To date, more than 10,000 endoprosthetic surgeries have been performed. The Pediatric Traumatology and Orthopedics Department specializes in treating musculoskeletal injuries and congenital orthopedic pathologies in children. The department has introduced and actively uses osteosynthesis of long tubular bones with elastic titanium nails, and it also conducts surgical treatment of congenital hip dislocation with pelvic osteotomy and acetabuloplasty. The Burn Injury Department treats patients with both acute thermal injuries and subsequent reconstructive surgeries. In 2012, to improve the clinical work of the department staff, the university installed an arthroscopic system from Karl Storz. Arthroscopic plastic surgery of the anterior cruciate ligament has been implemented and widely used. Shoulder joint arthroscopy is performed. The department addresses the issues of revision endoprosthetics.

The department has a Student Scientific Society (SNO). Every year, students participate with reports and publish the results of scientific research at international conferences. Training of residents and doctoral candidates is also conducted.

Department of Hospital Surgery

The "Hospital Surgery" department continually implements new methods and technologies into the educational process. Currently, practical skills training for bachelor's students is conducted at the Simulation and Educational Technology Center, where final assessments of practical skills take place in the form of OSCEs. Interactive and problem-based lectures have been introduced, and elements of problem-oriented learning and intern portfolios are used during practical classes in the bachelor's program and internship.

The department staff has produced over 30 educational videos, a chest and abdominal cavity model, a hand model, tool sets, X-rays, lab analyses, macro-preparations, trainers for suturing and tying knots deep in wounds, slides, tables, and clinical cases. A specialized office for professional practice has been established. For students' self-preparation, over 50 educational and methodological manuals have been printed in Russian, Kazakh, and English, including 2 textbooks: "Hospital Surgery" in 2 volumes and "Emergency Surgery," as well as a terminological dictionary (surgical) in the state language.
