History of the Department

The Department of Internal Medicine was established as a result of the consolidation of three previously independent departments of Internal Medicine No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and the course on Clinical Immunology and Allergology. Each unit underwent individual periods of formation and development. The latest period of development for the Department of Internal Medicine began on September 1, 2020, when a single Department of Internal Medicine was formed as a result of the reorganization of the three divisions and the course on Clinical Immunology and Allergology.

Department of Internal Medicine No. 1 has its history dating back to 1952. The department was established at the Karaganda Regional Hospital, and the first head was Associate Professor A.V. Ivanova. From 1970, the department was successively led by Associate Professor M.Sh. Tastambekova, Professor N.I. Albertov, V.M. Chernousov, Professor S.A. Baydurin, Associate Professor M.Ya. Falikovich, and Doctor of Medical Sciences R.A. Omarova. The traditions of the department were enriched by outstanding educators, clinicians, scientists, and healthcare organizers: Professor T.Z. Seisembekov, who trained 10 doctors and 35 candidates of sciences, served for many years as the Vice-Rector for Scientific Work and the Director of the Cardiology Research Institute in Astana; E.A. Abzhanov, who headed the cardiology service in the region; and Professor N.I. Albertov, who continued educational activities and led the therapeutic service in Israel. Doctoral dissertations were defended, and heads of departments at universities in Kazakhstan were produced by: Professor N.S. Umbetalyina, Professor K.A. Alikhanova, and Professor S.A. Baydurin. Throughout the years, the department employed candidates of medical sciences A.E. Dronova, V.P. Zavadsky, V.M. Chernousov, E.S. Seitenov, B.S. Kan; A.I. Balyagina, A.F. Galina, V.N. Department of Internal Medicine No. 2 formerly the Department of Hospital Therapy) was established in 1953. It was led by the legendary cohort of physician-scientists, with the first head of the department being Professor E.I. Tsukershtein (1953-1962), who established high-quality medical education as a principle. The foundational principles of working with students and patients, as well as scientific activities, were inherited by successive generations of leaders, each of whom made invaluable contributions to the department’s development, placing it among the flagship institutions of medical education. From 1963 to 1987, the department was headed by Professor K.Z. Tnimova. In 1971, the Department of Hospital Therapy No. 2 was established, led by Professor V.M. Karlinsky. The Department of Hospital Therapy No. 1 was successfully headed by Associate Professor L.K. Badina from 1987 to 1996. New challenges of the time necessitated the merging of departments during the difficult period of Kazakhstan's independence. The leadership of the Department of Hospital Therapy, subsequently known as the Department of Internal Diseases No. 2, was carried out by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor N.S. Umbetalina starting in 1996. From 2003 to 2012, the department was led by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor R.D. Konakbaeva.
