Doctors gained knowledge on respiratory rehabilitation of patients with COVID-19

17 April 2020

The joint work of specialists from the People's Republic of China and doctors of Karaganda has been continued.

The third day of the delegation of Chinese doctors began with a seminar on the topic of respiratory rehabilitation of patients with COVID-19.
On April 17, Professor A.A. Turmukhambetova, Vice-Rector for Strategic Development of the Medical University of Karaganda, opened the on-line training. She introduced Dr. TSiu Guangfeng, a physician at the central hospital of the Ili-Kazakh Autonomous District, which is a specialist in pulmonology.
Dr. Qiu Guangfeng in her opening remarks noted that the new disease caused by the SARS-Cov-2 virus is being studied in many aspects, and as information accumulates, specialist observations, scientific research, rethinking of theoretical concepts, including fundamental and clinical medicine , approaches are being developed not only for treatment, but also for the rehabilitation of survivors of the disease.

The most important in this sense is the program of respiratory rehabilitation of patients. Moreover, we are talking about several stages of such rehabilitation. Undoubtedly, ”said Dr. Qiu Guangfeng,“ it is necessary to keep in mind the categories of patients: those who have had a severe degree of illness or patients with a mild degree of COVID-19. In addition, respiratory rehabilitation should be considered as part of the integrated management of patients at an early stage of stabilization. The fact is that, according to the observations of Chinese doctors, people who have recovered from COVID-19, however, have pronounced residual effects not only from the respiratory system, but also from higher nervous activity. Some depression of respiratory reflexes, depression, desocialization, emotional “loss” from the usual lifestyle, participation in family life may persist. All this must be taken into account in the rehabilitation program.

Respiratory rehabilitation includes various groups of physical exercises for the muscles of the shoulder girdle, chest, diaphragm, as well as for general tone.

It is necessary to train the patient in order to resume self-control of breathing, sputum discharge, and restore the usual active lifestyle.

In conclusion, the doctor focused on the traditional types of Chinese folk treatment in the systems of Tai Chi, Ba Duan Jin and Qigong. Mentioning these types of therapy, the speaker said that she would provide those who wish with links to these programs.

At the end of the presentation, the moderator of the meeting A.A. Turmukhambetova thanked her colleague and announced the questions that came from the audience. Many of them concerned the tactics of antiviral therapy with COVID-19, as well as the particularities of managing pediatric patients. These and other questions were answered by Chinese experts who attended the training.
