ACADEMIC MOBILITY AT LUND UNIVERSITY

08 January 2019

A third-year PhD student of 6D110200 “Public Health” specialty Alua Omarova has been studying at Lund University (Lund, Sweden) as part of the academic mobility program implementationfor the periodfrom 8October to 29 December 2018.

During the training the paper entitled “Challenges of water supply in rural areas of Central Asia: A case study from central Kazakhstan” was completed and submitted to the “Water and Health”journal. I also had the opportunity to participate in the workshop “Revisiting Public Health Educational Programs at Karaganda State Medical University (KSMU): a Lund University-KSMU collaboration”. The objectives of the workshop were to determinea list of public health priorities, list of public health competencies for each program level (bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees), set health priorities in a resource-limited country, develop professional competencies based on the needs and design and evaluate an educational program based on defined competencies.

The most significant event of this trip was participation in the 11th European Public Health Conference entitled “Winds of change: towards new ways of improving public health in Europe”, organized by the European Public Health Association in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Slovenian Minister of Health Samo Fakin attended the opening ceremony and spoke about Slovenia’s impressive achievements in public health. It was a great honor to represent our university at a conference of this level, involving about 1,500 representatives from 65 countries. During the conference, I made the poster presentation on “The future of piped water in villages in low- and middle-income countries”. It was an invaluable experience that would be useful for further scientific work.

For this opportunity and support I express my deep gratitude to Rector, Professor R.S. Dosmagambetova, Vice-Rector for Strategic Development, Science and International Cooperation, ProfessorA.A. Turmukhambetova and the Department of the International Cooperation. In addition, I would like to give thanks to the foreign adviser PhD Kamshat Tusupova for the invitation, performing joint work and creating an enabling environment.
