Academic mobility at the Hanoi Medical University, Vietnam

20 June 2018

From January to June 2018, I am Nurgul Seitkhan, Master student of “Public Health” specialty completed training at the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine of the Hanoi Medical University, Vietnam in framework of the academic mobility.

Hanoi Medical University is one of the oldest universities in Vietnam, which is located in the capital of the country, in Hanoi.

The platform "One Health Network South East Asia - SEAOHUN" on which the public health master students is trained and practiced is the project of ComAcross and LACANET. "One Health" is defined as a joint, multi-sectoral and interdisciplinary approach - working at the local, regional, national and global levels. The goal is to achieve optimal health outcomes that recognize the relationship between people, animals, plants and their environment.

The training was conducted in English. On the "One Health" platform, there have been completed 6 different cycles in total for the whole academic period, as well as: "Environment and health", "Health policy and management", "Health promotion and health education", "Global health", "Public Health Ethics" and "Health Economics". Lectures and practical classes were held together with both the Vietnamese teaching staff and foreign visiting professors. Each cycle had its own specific teaching methodology, which is emphasized in the work in groups. For example, in the cycle on "Environment and Health" we listened the lectures of Professors Betsy Wattinberg and Alexander Bruce from the University of Minnesota, and a special expedition was organized to introduce life in the province to improve the level of health in rural areas. PhD Professor Phongsavan from the Sydney School of Public Health (Australia) conducted lectures on the cycle of Health Promotion and Health Education, which is remembered by the special teaching methodology "lecture-group work-tests" and all this in one session. Also there are conducted lectures by outstanding professors from the "SEAOHUN" for "Global Health" Professor Stanley Fenwick, Michael O'Leary - Tufts University, Nguyen Dang Vung; Politics and Management Dr. Karmen Hyukel Schneider - University of Sydney, along with PhD Professor Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu - Hanoi Medical University.

Hanoi is a very buzzing city where people start to work at 5 am, where no one has time be sadden and show offense to life, this is a dynamic city and a multitude with people's ingenuous smiles.

Many temples, millions of motorbikes and very narrow houses in which people live are impressive. The local evening rest is considered to be the drinking of green cold tea, on small stools formed in the middle of sidewalks. The people here are kind and friendly.

I express my deep gratitude to Rector, Professor R.S. Dosmagambetova, Vice-rector for Strategic Development, Science and International Cooperation A.A. Turmukhambetova and the Department of the International Cooperation, also to my research supervisor T. S. Sergaliev for provided opportunity and support.

Nurgul Seitkhan,

first-year Master student of the
