Academic Mobility in Action

06 June 2017

Karaganda State Medical University and Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University (BSRSU) signed a memorandum of cooperation. As a result of this cooperation, Head of Microbiology Department, Professor S.B. Akhmetova and Associate Professor G.A. Abdulina were invited to BSRSU within the academic mobility program for lecturers.

Batumi State University is a regional pioneer and it consistently implements reforms of the learning process, for example, it introduced the European System of Transfer and Accumulation of Credits (ECTS) and a three-tier system of education at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. The university has a scientific library with a unique collection of books and own publishing house.

The language of instruction for local students at the university is Georgian. However, classes for international students are taught entirely in English.

During the period from 8 May to 19 May 2017, we conducted classes in the amount of 2 credits on “Clinical Microbiology” for international students of the second year of training of the university.

We offered the problem lectures on current issues in clinical bacteriology. One of the lectures “Opportunistic hospital acquired infections” was a public one, attended by the local and foreign students of the second and third year of training and all the department employees. The lecture was simultaneously translated from English into Georgian by a professor of immunology, Leila Akhvlediani. Lecture attendants showed great interest in the problem of hospital infections. Professors also successfully conducted problem-based classes CBL on 2 topics: Laboratory Diagnosis of Bacterial Meningitis in Children and Laboratory Diagnosis of Pharyngitis, TBL (pyogenic cocci). In addition to the lectures, for local and international students were conducted two laboratory classes on the topics: Methods for Determining the Sensitivity of Microorganisms to Antibiotics and Identification of Microorganisms, Isolated from the National Fermented Milk Product “Matzoni”.

Following the academic mobility of 2016 in Kutaisi, in September 2016 was made a reciprocal visit to our university by the lecturers of Akaki Tsereteli State University (also known as Kutaisi University): a dean of the medical faculty Iren Pkhakadze and a professor of pharmacology Nato Alavidze. A year later, in April 2017, in our university were completed two credits on clinical microbiology by a student Giwa Abiodun Anthony of ATSU Georgia, within the program of academic mobility for students.

This year we also expect exchange of students and teachers. Marina de Koridze, a dean of the medical faculty and professors of microbiology and immunology intend to come to our university. In Batumi we also managed to establish contacts with BAU International University, which has branches in nineteen regions of the world. One of nineteen regions is Georgia with BAU Medical School in Batumi. The dean of the Medical School Leila Akhvlediani suggested signing a memorandum of cooperation between BAU and KSMU. We also received an invitation to conduct classes in a microbiology discipline in the framework of the academic mobility.

Academic mobility is the exchange of opinions, experience, knowledge, an outside perspective and, of course, motivation and potential for development. In this respect, we believe that cooperation with colleagues from Georgia will be mutually beneficial.

Georgia is not only a country with rich natural resources and picturesque places for staying, but it is also a country with the great human potential.

We would like to express our gratitude to Rector of KSMU, M.D., Professor R.S. Dosmagambetova, for fundamental knowledge that we can show at the international level and for understanding of the organization and methodological provision of the educational process. We can state with confidence that KSMU is a great example of the high level of organization of the educational process.

We also would like to thank the Department of International Cooperation and Bologna Process for promptness and efficient organization of work on academic mobility.
