Week of Neurology in Kazan

14 March 2017

On 13-17 February 2017 was held a neuroforum titled “Week of Neurology in Kazan-2017”, dedicated to the 160th anniversary of the Titan of Neurosciences Vladimir Mikhailovich Bekhterev. This is, without exaggeration, a unique project, as under its auspices from 13 to 17 February 2017 in the capital of Tatarstan were successively held the following events: All-Russian scientific conference of young scientists “The future of neuroscience”, whose geographical scope stretched from Moscow to Tashkent; III All-Russian Conference “Bekhterev’s readings – 2017”, attended by the best representatives of Kazan neurological school, bright scientists and brilliant speakers from Moscow and Perm, Saint Petersburg and Ulyanovsk; III All-Russian Olympiad in Neurology that became international this year and brought together 25 teams and more than 120 students and teachers of higher educational institutions of Russia and Kazakhstan. The Republic of Kazakhstan was represented by the students of Karaganda State Medical University, who took an active part in “Bekhterev’s readings” and built a wonderful team for participation in the Olympiad. Nelly Berent, Zhiganshina Ilmira, Tsilke Pavel and Litvinov Vyacheslav were led by the neurologist, lecturer of the Department of Neurology Ivanchina Marina V., who kindly agreed to accompany the team and participate as a fair jury member of the Olympiad. The grand opening of the Olympiad took place on 16 February 2017 at Kazan State Medical University. A fiery speech was delivered before the students of different parts of Russia and Kazakhstan by the Head of the Department of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Medical Genetics, Professor Eduard Zakirzyanovich Yakupov, who also told about the actual problems of neuroscience.

The first and longest contest task was a video contest “Business Card”, in which the students introduced their city, university, department, teachers and, of course, team members. The team of our University called “Tri dendrita, ne schitaya aksona” (Three dendrites, excluding axon), using all their creativity, brilliantly presented the history of the University and the Department of Neurology. It should be noted that all participating teams assumed their responsibility for preparation of videos, proving themselves not only as experts in neurology, but also as great filmmakers, musicians and actors. The second contest was participation in assessment of practical skills, made on the basis of CPS of Kazan State Medical University.

Our team in this competition was represented by the 5-year students Nelly Berent and Zhiganshina Ilmira, who showed excellent knowledge on research of neurological status of a patient. Subsequent contests were held at the Assembly Hall of Kazan State Medical University and included: “Remembering the past and respecting teachers, strive in the future” competition on knowledge of the history of neurology and current trends in neurosciences, “Neurology in art”contest, “Blitz” contest, and a competition on solving a clinical task. The participants were given 20 minutes to solve a clinical task, less than 30 seconds to think over the questions of “Blitz” contest, and in “Neuroscience in art” contest no more than a minute for each question. Unusual and complicated questions covered all areas of neurology, thus being a good means of testing knowledge of participants. For example, the questions of “Neurology in art” included the pieces of different films and musical works, in which the characters had different neurological syndromes.

The solemn closing ceremony of the Olympiad was held on 17 February. All teams were invited to lay flowers to the monument of V.M. Bekhterev. Then was conducted a ceremony of awarding the winners of the Olympiad. It should be noted that young people of Karaganda State Medical University were the pioneers of participating in the Olympiad of such level, but they scored the highest number of points in the contest of solving a clinical task.

At the end of the ceremony was given a tour around Kazan for the Olympiad participants. During the excursion the young people visited Kazan Kremlin, and also learned a lot of legends about the ancient and beautiful capital. The efforts, invested in this educational, scientific, clinical, educational project, were not in vain, because each participant of the Neuroforum learned something new for oneself, got inspiration for fresh ideas, remembered one’s teachers, enjoyed communication with colleagues, and, when leaving the hospitable city with pleasant memories, left a piece of one’s soul there in order to return to this beautiful city again.

Zhiganshina Ilmira, 5 course, GM.
