Our first experience in research activity

06 January 2017

Unfortunately, within 4 years of study at the Medical University, we did not have to conductacademic research, until we started the “Internal Medicine” course. Our path of studying the subject started from the Hematology Department of the Regional Clinical Hospital of Karaganda, where we with great interest studied the realm of diseases of hematopoietic tissue. Such a diverse clinical picture of hematological malignancies really impressed us, we began to analyze the scientific literature, including electronic resources (The Cochrane Library, PubMed, Elsevier), and then once came across the words of Professor P.A. Barkhash that “Every case of acute leukemia is so varied that it should be described”. This and many other things encouraged me and the young people of 4-083 group of the Faculty of General Medicine and Dentistry to do a scientific research, and also contributed to selection of the research project topic, namely “Epidemiological characteristics of acute leukemia in Karaganda region”. The defense of the research project with the use of the RBL principle (Research–Based Learning) took place on 26 December 2016 at the Department of Internal Diseases No. 1.

We enjoyed working on the research project. After all, we independently developed the study design, worked closely together as a team, were able to increase our creative potential and to acquire the skill of public speaking. We plan to continue working in this direction.

On behalf of 4-083 group, we express our deep appreciation to our supervisor, inspirer, hematologist, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor A.M. Zhussupova. Indeed, owing to her professionalism, skills in communication with patients, the ability to present the material with enthusiasm and kindness, prompted us to choose the topic for the research project relating to the hematological field of study. I believe that the following words of Hippocrates are about such teachers as Ayman Maksutovna: “Everything, that people search for in order to be wise, is in the art of healing: indifference to money, conscience, simplicity and modesty, respect for individual, determination, cleanliness and tidiness, abundance of knowledge and ideas, as well as everything necessary for healing of the sick.”

We heartily thank Associate Professor of the Department of Medical Rehabilitation, Visual Diagnostics and Physical Training, Candidate of Biological Sciences Sh.E. Dikanbaeva for her contribution to our scientific research, an opportunity to study the morphology of blast cells under a microscope and the reaction of blast cells to myeloperoxidase. After all, it is much more interesting and better to study the blood cells and bone marrow in real time, rather than just watch them in the atlas of hematology. We photographed the blood cells of our supervised patient with acute leukemia, and placed them on the poster “Clinical case of acute leukemia”.
