Since 2011 on the basis of the branch of City Hospital No. 1 (Prishahtinsk), the assistants of KSMU Department of Introduction into clinic have worked on organization of work on a voluntary basis among the students of 1 and 2 year for patient care at hospital.

Annually 1-year students actively participate in the work, starting in October, when students already can apportion their study time, and when the newcomers from different regions of Kazakhstan have adapted to Karaganda. This year has been no exception. The students come by one or two from a group and then come more people.

As you know, Department of Introduction into clinic is the first clinical department, providing access of students to clinics, study of the rules of patient care, familiarization with hospital activity, detailed study of the rules of disinfection, sterilization for maintaining sanitary and anti-epidemic, medical and protective regime in the hospital.

An important task of the Department is primarily avoiding harming the students, injuring their health, therefore focusing on safe hospital environment during the classes on introduction into clinic. The students receive clear instructions on how to behave in the event of various unforeseen situations, how to shift an overweight patient from a gurney to a hospital bed, and much more. In addition, the students are taught to assess functional status of a patient (measure temperature, blood pressure, take pulse, monitor urine output, register the documents, etc.).

The medical staff always looks forward to meeting the students, eagerly assisting in their work, since one nurse and two attendants are not enough for the nursing department: they do not always have time to talk to elderly patients, cheer them, give light massage, distract from bad thoughts. And this is where 1-year students are in great demand. 2-year students work at a therapeutic department: with the nurses on duty, in the treatment room, or just work at the department.

And many students completely reveal themselves here, working with real patients, not mannequins.

It is no secret that many students go to university considering it just a pure romance, not realizing the challenge of this profession, requiring patience and knowledge and energy. And only after work in the hospital, being on duty at least for one night they begin to understand it!

  Of course, the work of students is a real help to hospitals, and for students it is a good practice and motivation for further study. Currently, health care is focused more on outpatient services; at the hospital are kept difficult, decompensated patients, requiring special care, attention and psychological support. The students help to change the bed, perform medical procedures for prevention of bedsores, and accompany patients to different therapies. It is known that our patients are elderly people, quite often terminal patients, and the students sympathize them, relieving their pain, and grieve when the patients pass away.

  Much appreciation is given from the administration of the Hospital, the matrons and duty nurses for conducted work. They say, “We are pleased that you have chosen this profession!”
