The 1^st round of the all-Russian student Olympiad on surgery in the Urals Federal district was held in Yekaterinburg (Russia) on February 17-18, 2016, in which the team of KSMU students participated prepared by the Department of surgical diseases №2 and pathological anatomy, under the guidance of head of Department, Professor E. M. Turgunov.

Team memebers: Dolotbekuulu Amangeldy 4059 GM, Temirbaev Daniar 5094 GM, Bykova Tatiana 4069 GM, Berent Nellie 4073 GM, Kenzhebay Adilet 5094 GM, Beketova Meruert 5016 GM, Frolov Vadim 5111 GM, Rebrik Ivan 5081 GM.

The event hosts provided a warm welcome, the atmosphere was friendly and warm. The competition was held at the Department of topographic anatomy and operative surgery where there were 5 operating rooms, each operating room was equipped with biological materials, internal organs such as the intestines, kidneys, hearts, etc. In the vivarium they had dogs for experiments. One of them was used in laparoscopic surgery for suturing a perforation of the small intestine, which was part of the competition "Endoscopy". We were pleasantly surprised by the availability of laparoscopic full-featured rack at the Department.

The program of the Olympiad was very tight, 11 contests were envisaged and implemented: "the Knitting of surgical sites", "Intubation", "kidney Transplantation" "Vascular suture", "suture of the tendons, nerve and skin", "Urological contest", "Intestinal suture", "Endoscopy", "Theoretical competition".

Following the Olympiad, our team took the 5^th places:
1st place - D. Temirbayev, A. Kenzhebay, M. Beketova in the competition "the Seam of skin";
2nd place – A. Dolotbekuulu in the competition "Testing on surgery";
3rd place - T. Bykova, N. Berent, V. Frolov in the contest "Intestinal suture",  3rd place - M. Beketova, V. Frolov in the "Intubation"  3rd place - D. Temirbayev in the contest of "Simulation evaluation of the quality of suture".

During the Olympiad days, the organizers conducted a tour of the sights of Ekaterinburg, such as the Temple-on-Blood, "Europe-Asia" Obelisk and others.

The experience of foreign participation in the Olympiad on the practical skills and theoretical knowledge in surgery showed that a team of students of KSMU able to compete at the highest level with representatives of major Russian medical Universities.
In the future, the team of students of KSMU on surgery aims to participate regularly and win in national and international competitions, with the active support of the leadership
