Excursion to Turkestan

03 July 2023

Our international scientific and practical conference, which was held in the city of Shymkent, was continued with an excursion to Turkestan.

Turkestan is already more than 1,500 years old, the city was the capital of the Kazakh Khanate, and was the spiritual and political center of the Turkic-speaking people. Pilgrims believe that three trips to Turkestan are equal to one small hajj in Mecca.

Turkestan is one of the historical, cultural centers and ancient cities of Kazakhstan. This place is surrounded by priceless architecture of the past and is a popular destination for lovers of historical sites and pilgrimage tourism.

Those who come to bow to the grave of Yassawi must first bow to the grave of the Teacher and spiritual mentor Ahmed Yasawi Arystan-Baba.

The appearance of the monument to Arystan-Babu is also fanned by a legend. When the Great Timur erected the walls of the Turkestan mausoleum of Haji Ahmed Yassaui here, a terrible storm broke out and destroyed the walls of the mausoleum. When the walls were rebuilt, the storm tore them down again. After that, Timur had a dream about an old man who explained that no matter how great the Student was, no matter how the Student of the Teacher surpassed, you must first erect a mazar for the Teacher and Mentor Ahmed Yassaui - Arystan-Bab, and then the Student himself. Emir Timur did just that. On the site of the building, which was constantly destroyed by the storm, a new structure was erected - the Mausoleum of Arystan-Baba.

1.The Azret-Sultan Museum-Reserve is a combination of architectural and archaeological monuments created in 1978 and is part of the Khoja Ahmed Yassavi Museum-Reserve of Architecture.

2.The most popular part of the museum is the mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, which is the earliest historical monument and is included in the list of historical heritage sites of UNESCO. The mausoleum was erected in honor of the great Sufi and disseminator of the Islamic religion Khoja Ahmed Yassawi at the place of his burial.

3.In addition to the mausoleum, the complex is surrounded by several museums, including:

4.Koltobe, Huma Mosque, mosques built underground Aulie Kumshyk ata and Hilvet, Shildekhan ritual complex,

5.Eastern bathhouse, medieval citadel and shahristan, fragments of the fortress and the ruins of the mausoleums of Alkhoja ata and Gaukhar anna.

6.Mausoleums of Rabigi Sultan Begim, Yesim Khan, Abylay Khan, Zholbarys, Kasym Khan, Zhanibek Batyr, Kazybek Biy and others.

There are over 100 monuments of history and archeology, about 25,000 written, architectural and numismatic exhibits in the collection of the museum-reserve.
