Experience of Dr. PhD professor Kiril Terziyski at the Department of Pathological Physiology of the Karaganda State Medical University

25 October 2017

At the Department of Pathological Physiology of Karaganda State Medical University from October 16, 2017 to October 27, 2017, Professor Kiril Terziyski - PhD doctor, professor of the Department of Pathological Physiology of Plovdiv Medical University (Bulgaria) conducted lectures and practical lessons for students of the 2nd and 3rd years on the "General Medicine" specialty of the English department, in 2001-2003, 2018, 2033, 2034 multilingual groups, as well as for Master students, residents, PhD students in the frame of academic mobility. Professors of the faculty of physiology, morphology, pathological physiology, neurosurgery and neurology, psychiatry and narcology, medical psychology and communicative skills, internal diseases No. 1 and No. 2 were invited to the lectures of Professor K. Terziyski. In 2013, Professor K. Terziyski defended his Ph.D. thesis on "Determining the change in cardiac-pulmonary exercise test parameters in COPD, chronic heart failure in liver cirrhosis."

The scientific interests of the professor are related to the study of the mechanisms of the change in the function of higher nervous activity, respiratory, cardiovascular and endocrine systems in the state of sleep in various pathological processes. Professor K. Terziyski  read a course of lectures on somnology, for example, such as: “History of sleep medicine. Phylogenesis and ontogenesis of sleep. Significance of sleep. Neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of sleep. Mediators of sleep. Motor and muscle control during the sleep”, “Endocrinology relevant to sleep. Respiratory physiology relevant to sleep. Sleep and vigilance. Sleepiness and wakefulness”, “Polysomnography. Scoring of normal sleep and basic pathology. Multiple Sleep Latency Test and Maintenance of wakefulness test. Actigraphy. Sleep diaries. Questionnaires” etc.

Lectures are read in classical English, fascinating, using a large number of examples, with colorfully illustrated slides. The manner of presenting the material is free, with a clearly worked out diction. The students noted the profound approach of the professor to the explanation of the mechanisms of changes in the functions of higher nervous activity during the sleep in pathological conditions associated with impaired functions of the most important body systems: cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine. Lectures of Professor K. Terziyski  have great practical importance and attracted interest among teachers of the Department of Physiology, Pathological Physiology, Psychiatry and Narcology, Internal Diseases No. 1 and No. 2. Some elements of the material on the interpretation of modern conceptions of somnology will be used in conducting auditor and extracurricular classes for third year students of the "General Medicine" specialty and for undergraduates in studying the discipline "Pathology of organs and systems"; on the possibility of joint research activities of the faculty with active involvement of students in research work.
