In the 2015-2016 school year in KSMU resumed the good old tradition of department of hospital surgery – conduction surgical Olympiad among senior students.

The purpose of this event is to improve the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of the students to identify the most talented students for the  study in internship in the direction of surgery, also the selection of students for participation in the International surgical Olympiad which is held  in the Russian Federation.

To participate in the competition were  allowed students of  4-6 courses on specialty "General Medicine", also  interns-surgeons. Registration took  place online on site  "Surgical Association  of  Karaganda region ". Total amount of participants in the Olympiad was 102.

Sampling was carried out in 3 rounds.
The 1st round was conducted in the form of a quiz of 50 tests, so from 102 participants only 28 could take a part in  the second round.
2nd stage of the surgery olympiad  was carried out  on simulators and mannequins in a demonstration of practical skills:
1. Tying simple stitches for  time
2. Tying stitches  in the depth  of wound for  time  
3. Endosurgical stitch on the simulator LapSim
4. Intestinal seam on the dummy of  intestinal tube for  time and quality
5. The seam of the vessel by Carrel on dummy of  vessel for time and quality
According to the results of the second round, 10 participants could take a part in the next round.

At the 3rd stage was conducted the team competition on the surgical skills with the use of experimental animals in the vivarium of KSMU. The task of students was suturing wounds of intestines in experimental animals. Conducted general anesthesia, laparotomy and intestine injury, and then suturing the intestine.
The competition  was held in difficult conditions, the skills demonstrated in vivo that create additional psychological stress among students, the conditions of competition were as close as possible to the real conditions of the surgeon's work.
As a result of 3 rounds of surgical Olympiad  winner was a student Temirbaev Daniyar from group 5094.

Second place was awarded to a student Bykova Tatiana from group № 4069.
Third place was awarded to a student of  group№ 4073Berent Nelly.
The Management Board of the  IS  "SAKR "and the the teaching staff of the department of surgical diseases №2 and pathological anatomy congratulates  winners of the Olympiad, expressed gratitude and appreciation to the staff of the Center of practical skills, personally, the head of Director - Riklefs V.P., vivarium staff and personally, Head of department -  Auezova M.H, doctoral candidate Yusifov Z.A. and Matyushko D.N. for the help in the Olympiad.
