Department of Internal Medicine No.2

The Department of Hospital Therapy (now Internal Medicine №2) was founded in 1953. The first head of the department was prof. E. I. Zuckerstein (from 1953 to 1962). From 1963 to 1987 the department was headed by prof. K. Z. Tnimova. In 1971, the Department of Hospital Therapy No.2 under the leadership of V.M. Karlinsky was organized. From 1987 to 1996 Department of Hospital Therapy No. 1 was headed by Associate Professor L.K. Badina. Since July 1, 1996, due to reorganization, both departments merged into one - the department of hospital therapy, which later became known as the Department of Internal Diseases No. 2. The head of the department was appointed by doctor of medical science, prof. N.S. Umbetalina. From 2003 to 2012 the department was headed by doctor of medical science, prof. R.D. Konakbaeva. Since March 2012 till September 1, 2014 the department was headed by doctor of medical science prof. L.G. Turgunova. From September 1, 2014 Department of Internal Diseases No. 2 is chaired by Candidate of Medical Sciences, associate professor Ye.M. Laryushina.

The main scientific directions of the department are gerontology and geriatrics, cardiology, gastroenterology, hematology, endocrinology. The members of the department participated in the “Environmental Risks and Public Health” scientific and technical program “M14-465” A randomized, double-blind phase III study to compare ABT-494 with placebo and adalimumab in patients with moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis receiving stable background therapy with methotrexate and who have not achieved an adequate response to it" clinical trial. Currently, the department staff are involved in scientific and technical projects: «Development of a scientific basis for the formation of a preventive environment in order to preserve public health» and « Study of the mechanisms of development and the possibility of preventing diabetes mellitus caused by the diabetogenic tryptophan metabolites» in partnership of the research topic of Karaganda State University named after E.A. Buketov. 

The Department of Internal Diseases No 2 is located at 5 clinical sites: Regional Clinical Hospital, University Hospital, Regional Center of Traumatology and Orthopedics named after Professor H.Zh. Makazhanov, Regional Cardiac Surgery Center and Temirtau Central Hospital. The department has specialized therapeutic disciplines (cardiology – acute coronary syndrome department, arrhythmology, gastroenterology, hematology, rheumatology, endocrinology, general therapy). The clinical bases of the department are equipped with modern equipment for laboratory, instrumental and functional diagnostics. 

The teaching staff of the department has a high pedagogical, medical qualifications and scientific potential. 57% of teachers have academic degrees and titles, including 2 doctors of medical sciences. All members of the department have medical categories, with 65% - the highest, 4 excellent health care provider. The head of the department is Ye.M. Laryushina, Professor Sh.S. Koygeldinova, Professor L.G. Turgunova, Associate Professor L.K. Badina, Associate Professor N.V. Vasilieva was awarded the Medal of P.M. Pospelov «For contribution to the development of KSMU». Employees of the department are actively introducing effective technologies for diagnosing and treating internal pathology into the educational process and into the work of practical public health, training seminars and master classes for doctors are conducted. Leading professors, associate professors and staff of the department provide ongoing specialized advice to patients in the city and region. Department staff are the authors of a large number of publications, teaching aids, guidelines, textbooks. 

According to the results of the rating assessment of the teaching staff of KSMU in the 2008/2009 academic year, the department was awarded a diploma «The best university department», Associate Professor L.G.Turgunova – a diploma «The best assistant professor of KSMU», in 2009-2010, diploma "The best department faculty" in 2010-2011, associate Professor K.K. Toleubekov - diploma "The best curator of the year" in 2009-2010. In 2011-2012 the department was awarded with diplomas" The best department of the university "and" The best department of the faculty." In 2012-2013 G.T. Igimbaeva was awarded the diploma "Best Assistant University".

The Department of Internal Diseases No. 2 has a wealth of experience in education of students, interns and residents, generously transferring the knowledge and skills of the general practitioner. Also, the department is preparing undergraduates and doctoral students. The educational process is carried out in the specialty "General Medicine" in the following disciplines: introduction to clinical medicine-2 (3 course), internal diseases (4th year, internship), elective discipline "Clinical electrocardiography" (5th year). Teaching is conducted in the state, Russian and English languages. In the process of learning, active teaching methods are widely used – problem solving lectures, practical lessons on the methods of TBL, CBL, RBL, e-learning technologies, interdisciplinary, simulation training, etc. Students actively participate in research projects of the department, annually presenting the results of scientific research in the form of reports and publications at international conferences. In 2018, intern-therapist Kaisina A. took the 1st place in the contest “The best intern-therapist of the Republic of Kazakhstan”. 

Training in residency is carried out in the areas of "Hematology", "Gastroenterology, including children" and "Endocrinology, including children." In the same areas, retraining cycles, advanced training, training seminars and master classes are held.

The chair has a high corporate culture. Performances - “New Year”, “Nauryz Meiramy”, “Last Call”, meetings with veterans, intellectual games have become a good tradition at the department. Students of the department constantly take an active part in charity and health promotions held by the department.
